Ethanol is a widely used active ingredient in surface and hand disinfectants. It is identical to the alcohol in drinks and white spirit. It is also an important solvent, for example in perfumes, and is used as an additive in gasoline (E10). In addition to ethanol, the alcohols propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol are also used in disinfectants. In order to meet the antimicrobial efficacy requirements of hand disinfectants in the professional medical environment, ethanol contents of at least 80%, preferably 85%, are necessary. Then a comprehensive virus effectiveness is also possible, but this must always be proven for each individual product according to current European standards.
